An Authorised EMoney Institution or otherwise known as an AEMI, is a type of financial institution authorised to issue e-money. AEMI’s are quite limited in the services they can provide to their customers. An AEMI can only provide payment services as well as hold funds that are deposited into an account. Other common banking options like investing and credit services are not included in the scope of an AEMI.
Most transactions at AEMIs are processed using EMoney. This can happen directly through the AEMI’s own platform, or it can be integrated into an external platform using APIs. For depositing and holding funds, AEMIs and legacy banks have no difference in the customers’ regard, until further financial services are required.
